Cape May County will start phase three of the Rehabilitation and Widening Project for Avalon Boulevard (County Road No. 601) Bridge over Avalon Canal next week.
Mugrose Construction will be placing concrete construction barrier curbs to close off the center portion of the bridge. Inbound (eastbound) traffic will be limited to one lane along the south side of the bridge. Outbound (westbound) traffic will be in one lane along the north side of the bridge. Also, the existing deck will be removed and replaced with a slightly thicker, reinforced concrete deck. Because the new deck is thicker, lightweight concrete is being used to reduce the loading on the bridge.
Once completed, the rehabilitated bridge will provide two inbound lanes with one being a dedicated left turn lane, one outbound lane, four foot wide shoulders along both sides, and a six foot sidewalk along the north side of the bridge. Additionally, streetlights on the bridge are the same design as the ones on Dune Drive in Avalon.
This phase of construction is part of a $3,448,774 contract awarded by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders in June 2010 and paid for by Federal funds.
