A major beach fill in Avalon is getting a few days late start. Avalon officials say the new projected start date is on or about May 23. Two dredges, the “Illinois” and the “Alaska,” are coming to the southern New Jersey coast to perform a major beach project in both Avalon and Sea Isle City. Avalon’s portion of the beach fill will result in at least 500,000 cubic yards of sand being placed on the Borough’s beaches from Ninth Street south to 26th Street. Avalon is currently seeking permit modifications that would allow for more sand to be placed on the local beaches. The state is going to reimburse Avalon and Sea Isle City 75 percent for the costs associated with the beach fill.
