Atlantic County government has approved more than 10,000 applications for federal food stamp benefits totaling more than $5.18 million through the disaster-related Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (D-SNAP) for residents who experienced unanticipated loss due to Hurricane Irene.
Residents submitted applications between September 13 and September 20 in Atlantic County to receive assistance based on federal and state guidelines. The program is authorized by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), operated by the state Department of Human Services and administered by individual counties. As of mid-October, FNS had provided more than $26 million to 90,460 households statewide.
Atlantic County officials anticipate as many as 3,000 additional applications to be processed before the end of the year.
