It was 50 years ago, on October 17th, that a ferry crossed the Delaware Bay from Lewes, Delaware, and docked at the U.S. Coast Guard base in Cape May. The Cape May Gazette reports that the crossing was a trial run but thousands of people from Delaware were on-board the vessel, including then Delaware Governor Elbert Corvel. The first official crossing by the Cape May-Lewes Ferry occurred two years later, in 1964. The ferry plans to mark its official 50th anniversary on that date in 2014.
