The Boardwalk Basketball Classic in Wildwood generated $13,000 in scholarship money for students at Wildwood Catholic Academy and Wildwood High School. Wildwood Catholic Academy graduate Jahlil White has been named the Big 5 rookie of the year in men’s basketball. One of the best players on the Philadelphia Eagles has been released. Longtime defensive lineman Fletcher Cox was released by the team on Thursday to help get the Eagles under the salary cap. The Eagles may try to renegotiate a new contract with Cox at a lower price to keep him around.
Local baseball star Chase Petty is now a member of the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds acquired the former Mainland High School star in a trade with the Minnesota Twins that sent veteran Sonny Gray to Minnesota. Petty was the 26th overall pick in last year’s baseball draft.
A very good basketball season has ended for the Wildwood Lady Warriors. Wildwood dropped a State Group I semifinal game to Shore Regional Wednesday night, 53-48 after leading at the half, and after three quarters. In another state semifinal game, Mainland knocked off Ewing, 54-50.
