The Wildwood Crest Borough Commission may entertain discussion of eliminating designated smoking areas on the beaches. Crest officials meet Wednesday afternoon and could consider this measure. The Commission is also expected to vote on new regulations that would prohibit the smoking and consumption of cannabis products in public places.
Police in Wildwood Crest will be cracking down on distracted driving infractions through the month of April, which begins tomorrow. Police say they are participating in the “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign. Over 2,800 people lost their lives nationwide three years ago due to distracted driving.
The Wildwood Crest Commission meets Wednesday morning largely with routine business on its agenda. The Commission is expected to address an ordinance that regulates the parking of golf carts and motorcycles. It also is expected to address other business involving change orders to contracts, vending machines, and parking meters.
Swearings in ceremonies were held this week for the Wildwood Crest Police Department. Crest Police announced that Richard D’Amico was sworn in as a Captain, and a new police officer was added, Ryan Tossone. Two others were also sworn in during the ceremony held at the Borough Commission meeting.
The Wildwood Crest Volunteer Fire Department had to respond to a vehicle fire on the beach Monday. The vehicle appeared to be a white SUV that was completely engulfed in flames. Wildwood Crest is taking a proactive approach to help some local businesses impacted by Covid restrictions. Crest officials announced Monday that temporary site plans will be allowed for restaurants and retail businesses. Also, the back beach areas will be used for motels to put deck and lounge chairs for the comfort of their patrons.
Wildwood Crest is extended its wooden walkways that lead to Borough beaches in advance of the 2021 beach season. Mayor Don Cabrera says the walkways will be extended by approximately 120 feet. The extension project should be wrapped up by the middle of June.
Wildwood Crest Police are warning the public about a telephone scam regarding past electric bills that are due. Police say the scammers give out a number allegedly for the local electric utility, but it’s not really them. Police say Atlantic City Electric typically will send a letter about past due balances before initiating phone contact.
Wildwood Crest Police have announced the passing of former chief Alfred Corchiani. Corchiani passed away last Wednesday. He was promoted to become the department’s ninth Chief of Police in December, 1994. Wildwood Crest employees donated a check worth $2,147 to the local “Love of Linda” organization. The employees held a “Pink Out” fundraiser that raised money for the group that assists families who are dealing with the effects of cancer. The effort was spearheaded by Nick Holland, and resulted in a popular t-shirt drive.
