Senate President Steve Sweeney is urging New Jersey and other states not to cave in to what he calls “extortion” money demanded by sports leagues in order to approve legalized sports betting. Sweeney sent letters to leaders in every state in the Union to oppose making payments to these leagues before sports betting may occur.
Former Phillies and Mets outfielder Lenny Dykstra was arrested Wednesday morning on charges that he threatened an Uber driver with a weapon, and had drugs in his possession. Authorities say Dykstra had cocaine, pot, and ecstasy in his possession when he was arrested. He’s 55 years old and charged with making terroristic threats.

One person was killed during a motor vehicle accident in Bridgeton Monday morning. Police say the accident occurred on North Burlington Road shortly before sunrise. The vehicle overturned and stopped near a tree. The driver was the only occupant of the car.
The Cape May County Police Academy has received a national award from the National Association of Counties. The award was given to Cape May County for its ability to meet the needs of a changing law enforcement environment. The nomination highlighted the Academy’s driving simulator, indoor range, and the de-escalation program.
The state navigation channels in the Barnegat Bay that had been loaded with silt and sediment are again safe for navigation. The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that the channels have been safely dredged and will be open before Memorial Day weekend. Many of those channels were filled with sediment during Hurricane Sandy.
The United States Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing boater in the Delaware River. The Guard announced Tuesday afternoon that the search has been suspended after two days turned up no results. The man was on board a small boat that capsized Monday.
