The New Jersey Task Force has arrived in North Carolina to provide assistance for Hurricane Florence relief efforts. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper stopped by to meet with the men and women from the New Jersey State Police to thank them for their efforts.
The jury has been selected for the upcoming murder trial for a man accused of killing April Kauffman six years ago. Ferdinand Augello has pleaded not guilty in connection with the case; opening arguments are slated for Monday. The trial is expected to garner plenty of media attention.
The Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City is sold out after it offered free rooms to Hurricane Florence evacuees. The casino issued a statement saying that the casino is packed full through Saturday, but rooms are available starting on Sunday. Owner Bruce Deifik says the free room offer “was the right thing to do”.
A 35 year old volunteer firefighter is accused of starting a fire in Hamilton Township, calling 911, then responding to the fire to put it out. Police say Matthew Hesser of Vineland is a Mizpah firefighter who responded to the scene to put out the fire. He has been charged with arson and criminal mischief.
A woman who was reported missing from Lower Township has been safely located. Carmen Rosario was reported missing by police Wednesday; police notified emergency partners that she was safely located. No other information is available.

Starting next June, single use plastic bags will not be offered by merchants in Avalon. Borough Council Wednesday night unanimously approved a new ordinance that eliminates single use plastic bags, plastic straws, and styrofoam containers to be issued by merchants. A few other coastal communities in our region have approved similar ordinances.
