An Egg Harbor Township man appeared in court on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to charges that he killed his girlfriend with a hammer last month. 36 year old LaShawn Smith was indicted on a murder charge and other offenses. 28 year old Sarah Phillips was killed by Smith, according to authorities.
A 78 year old boat captain from Middle Township has pleaded not guilty to a charge of seaman’s manslaughter in connection with a fatal boating accident off Rhode Island. Cooper Bacon offered the plea in court on Tuesday. If convicted of the charge, Bacon could reportedly face up to ten years in prison.

Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti will get the appointment this week, according to NJ.com. She retired from the turnpike authority seven years ago.

A three alarm fire broke out at the Moose Lodge in Lower Township early Tuesday morning. Lower Township Police say the Erma, Town Bank, and Villas fire departments all responded to the fire at the building on Seashore Road. The building was evacuated, and the fire was extinguished within minutes.
