A small power outage in Ocean City forced some boardwalk rides to stop at unexpected times. The outage Monday night affected Ocean City’s Playland Castaway Cove, according to the Press of Atlantic City. A Ferris wheel was turned by hand in order to get riders off. Power was restored by nightfall.
The Wildwood City Fire Department responded to 455 calls during the month of June. Nine of the calls involved fires, while 23 of the calls involved alcohol, drugs, overdose, or toxins. The Department also made 688 fire safety inspections during the month.
James Deever is the new Council President in the Borough of Avalon. Council held a brief meeting Monday morning and unanimously selected Deever for the leadership position. The first major competition of the lifeguard season to be held in Cape May County this summer will take place this evening in Cape May. The Cape May Beach Patrol SuperAthlon will be held at 6:30pm and will include representatives of various beach patrols in both Cape May and Atlantic counties.
A 17 year old boy died over the weekend after a drowning incident at a pond located in Millville. Police announced that the teen succumbed to the incident at Menantico Ponds on Friday. His friends were able to drag him to shore with the assistance of a stranger.
New Jersey State Police have announced the capture of a man who robbed a branch of TD Bank in Upper Township over the weekend. Police have charged 39 year old Joseph Crandley of Cape May with robbing the bank. Numerous tips from social media led to Crandley’s apprehension.
The new state budget has been signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy. Murphy signed the spending plan late Sunday night and brags that it will mean huge investments into public schools, property tax relief, and New Jersey Transit. Big tax hikes are coming to people who earn more than $5 million annually.
Lawmakers in Trenton finally gave approvals to the new $37.4 million state budget Sunday evening. Lawmakers met through the day to approve the spending plan in both the Assembly and the Senate after gathering at 8:00am to discuss the compromise. Matt Szczur’s stint with the San Diego Padres has come to an end. CoastSportsToday.com’s Brian Cunniff reports that Szczur has been designated for assignment by the Padres which means the team can either trade, release, or waive him. He was batting only .187 for the Padres this season.
