Winds should begin to die down late this afternoon as the big storm system continues to leave our region. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6pm Monday with gusts approaching 50mph in some communities, including Avalon. Wind chills have been below 0 degrees for most of the day.
A mobile home was completely destroyed by fire Sunday night in Egg Harbor Township. Fire officials say the blaze took place at a unit at the Normsdale Mobile Home Park on Ocean Heights Avenue. There were no injuries.
Governor Phil Murphy has named two more individuals to the Pinelands Commission. Murphy announced that Kelly Mood and Teresa Lettman are his nominees that must be confirmed by the State Seante. Lettman would replace a 93-year old member of the Commission.
One person is dead after being struck by two motor vehicles in Vineland Friday night. City police say the accident occurred at the intersection of South Delsea Drive and Chimes Terrace; the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police continue to investigate.
The big winter storm that will impact the northeast will be a rain event for us. Accu weather is calling for rain Saturday night into Sunday, with a possible mix with snow after 3pm Sunday. Temperatures Sunday night will fall to 13 degrees Sunday night, and not hit 25 degrees on Monday.
Some commercial travel restrictions are in place by State Police in advance of the weekend winter storm. Commercial travel restrictions are in place along the entire length of I-195, I-80, I-287, and along a section of I-295 between exits 60 and 76. Restrictions are not in place on the Garden State Parkway.
A 30 year old teacher at Pleasantville High School has been accused of having sex with an 18 year old student. Jessica Gaeckle of Galloway Township was arrested Friday according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. Gaeckle is also accused of asking the student to destroy evidence upon learning of the investigation.
Congressman Jeff Van Drew has been appointed to a House committee dealing with agriculture. Van Drew is also hopeful to get on the natural resources committee as well. Van Drew says it’s been a long time since any congressman from New Jersey has served on the Agriculture Committee.
The Avalon Borough Council meets next week and will consider some significant changes to its construction laws and regulations. The new rules will shorten construction hours on some days, and designate some holidays where construction will not be allowed. Council meets Wednesday afternoon.
He’s guilty. 34 year old Jeremiah Monell has been convicted of stabbing his estranged wife to death in December, 2016 in Cumberland County. Tara O’Shea-Watson was stabbed nearly 90 times during the attack. Monell did not testify in his own defense; he will now face life behind bars.
