Democrats in Trenton have advanced their own budget that will find its way to the desk of Governor Phil Murphy, who promises a veto. Leaders say they just don’t answer to the Governor and will not act subservient to Murphy. They are at odds over Murphy’s request for large tax hikes.
Former Middle Township soccer star Anthony Maher was inducted into the Mercyhurst University Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony earlier this month. Jury deliberations are underway in Atlantic County for two men who are accused of shooting former Atlantic City Police Officer Josh Vadell back in September, 2016. Vadell was shot during a robbery attempt in the downtown area. Vadell was shot in the head during the incident; he survived and testified in the case.
Disappointing news for children of Wildwood this summer as the Fox Park Playground will not open this summer due to budget issues. The Cape May County Herald reports that ordering new playground equipment has not taken place; Wildwood has yet to adopt a municipal budget even though the year is nearly half over.
Children are not losing their marbles this week in Wildwood, they are playing it at Ringer Stadium on the beach. The annual National Marbles Tournament continues through Thursday with a king and a queen crowned in the boys’ and girls’ competitions. The tournament was first held nearly 100 years ago.
Vineland Police say a 37 year old woman is charged with DUI after she allegedly swapped seats with a driver after a hit and run accident. Jennifer L. Beattie was cited for reckless driving and for driving on a revoked license. The Daily Journal reports that Beattie swapped seats right after the accident.
Catherine McCabe has been sworn in as the new Commissioner for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. McCabe was nominated to the position by Governor Phil Murphy. McCabe says decisions will be made on the best available science.
Avalon’s Hodge Podge was honored Tuesday afternoon by Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. Democratic Assemblyman Arthur Barclay from Camden County resigned from his position this week due to charges related to domestic violence. Camden County Democratic Party Chairman James Beach says he received a letter from Barclay who cites the official decision based on “health reasons”. Barclay has confirmed his arrest.
Students who attend the Technical Education Center in Cumberland County may be permitted to soon play sports in their home school districts. The Daily Journal reports that principals from Millville, Cumberland Regional, and Cumberland County could start negotiations next week on the deal. The state told the districts to begin having the meetings this month.
