A Victorian-era home suffered damage during a fire Monday afternoon at 924 Washington Street in Cape May. Fire officials say the blaze was at the rear of the home on the third floor. Efforts wee made by several fire departments to prevent the blaze from spreading. There were no injuries.
Republican David Richter of Avalon wants to challenge Congressman Jeff Van Drew in 14 months. Richter announced Monday that he has filed paperwork necessary to seek the republican nomination. richter and Brian Fitzherbert of Egg Harbor Township are the two announced republican candidates.
No criminal charges will be filed in connection with a fatal pedestrian motor vehicle in Ocean City during Memorial Day weekend. County prosecutors say the accident that killed Thomas Gibbons Jr. of Pennsylvania had no criminal intent. The collision occurred at 8th Street and Bay Avenue.

A tornado touched down in Millville last Wednesday during an outbreak of severe weather. The National Weather Service reports that the tornado was small, with winds between 65-85mph. Several rows of solar panels were damaged at a solar farm near a municipal complex.
Lower Township Police will participate in a major crackdown on drunk driving starting later this week, and running through Labor Day weekend. Police will participate in “Drive Sober, or Get Pulled Over”, starting August 16th. Sobriety checkpoints will be established.
As summer winds down, gas prices begin to fall in New Jersey. Mid Atlantic AAA reports that the price for a gallon of gasoline now averages $2.79 in Cape May County, which is a nickel above the statewide average. The national average remains at $2.67.
A 2013 graduate of Wildwood High School did nothing but help his chances at making the final cut for the Arizona Cardinals. Governor Phil Murphy has signed a new law that will require five high schools to not start classes until 8:30am so students can sleep in longer. Some advocates have pushed for later start times for high school students. A four-year trial program will begin; the school districts have not yet been selected.
Cape May is moving forward with a measure that could result in the prohibition of certain single use plastic items, including bags. Council met last week with with its Environmental Commission and other volunteers to talk about the best way to tackle the problem. Avalon and Stone Harbor implemented prohibitions back in June.
