Governor Phil Murphy has signed a new law that will require five high schools to not start classes until 8:30am so students can sleep in longer. Some advocates have pushed for later start times for high school students. A four-year trial program will begin; the school districts have not yet been selected.
Cape May is moving forward with a measure that could result in the prohibition of certain single use plastic items, including bags. Council met last week with with its Environmental Commission and other volunteers to talk about the best way to tackle the problem. Avalon and Stone Harbor implemented prohibitions back in June.
An Atlantic City man has been charged with stabbing another man as he tried to break up a fight on Friday. Police say Christopher Parker was arrested on North Florida Avenue after the crime. A 53 year old man suffered severe injuries.

The Runaway Tram is open for business. The long-awaited opening of the new roller coaster on Morey’s Surfside Pier at 25th Avenue and the boardwalk has occurred. The new roller coaster cost $4 million, has 922 feet of track, and reaches a height of 40 feet in the air.

The Cape May City Council has moved the start time for a public hearing on a new public safety building. The meeting will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, August 13th to allow more time for public comment.
A very controversial rental tax on Jersey Shore properties will be repealed today by Governor Phil Murphy. A new bill to repeal the 11.6 percent rental tax on short term vacation rental properties arranged directly by owners will be wiped out. Murphy and democrats agreed to repeal the law during budget negotiations earlier this summer.
