New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order on Wednesday that opens the door for a publicly run bank in the Garden State. New Jersey would become only the second state in the union to do so. The order requires a commission to be formed that must have a report ready within one year.
Mavis Discount Tire will open not one, but two locations in Vineland in 2020. The Daily Journal reports that the stores will be opened on Landis Avenue, and on South Delsea Drive. The first store should be open before summer.
So, just how cold was it Wednesday morning when you got up to go to work? How about 20 degrees in Woodbine, and 21 degrees in Atlantic City. Dozens of new record low temperature records for this date were set due to very cold air moving in to our region Tuesday night.
The Beach Theater in Cape May has been sold. The Cape May Star and Wave reports that the theater sold Tuesday at auction for $6.5 million. The theater has been closed by its former owners; no word yet on who the new owners may be.
Lower Township Police say all of the fire departments in the community responded to a stubborn house fire that destroyed a home located at 2727 Bay Drive in the Villas Tuesday morning. When officers arrived, the house was fully involved in flames. No injuries are reported; the cause of the fire is under investigation.
New Jersey State Police are searching for 36 year old Martin Casiano-Roque of Atlantic City. He is wanted in connection with the sexual assault of a child. Police say are welcoming anonymous tips to his whereabouts.
Walgreens is closing hundreds of stores throughout the United States, including the store located at Delsea Drive and Landis Avenue in Vineland. The Daily Journal reports that the store closed last week, on November 6th. The pharmacy had been open for a little over six years.
Federal flood insurance rates will not be going up for at least another year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that proposed rate hikes that would have started next October 1st have been delayed for another year. Senator Robert Menendez says he’s “pleased” with the delay.
Code Blue is in effect in Cape May County from Wednesday at 6pm until the following morning. The Code Blue designation means that municipalities shall provide for some temporary shelter from the cold for those who need it in their communities. Overnight temperatures are expected to remain below freezing.
Galloway Township Police have charged a 15 year old boy with breaking into three businesses this month. Police say the owner of Giovanni’s II Pizzeria caught the boy breaking into his business during the early morning hours on Sunday. The youth is charged with three counts of burglary, theft, and criminal mischief.
