Police in Brigantine are investigating a shooting early Monday that resulted in injuries. Police announced on their social media page that a shooting occurred on 13th Street north around 1:30am Monday; a man and woman are both hospitalized as a result of the shooting. The investigation continues.
New Jersey State Police have responded to 343 traffic accidents that have occurred during the winter storm event. These numbers were as of 10:00am Monday. Police had also responded to nearly 300 motorist assist calls.
The County has closed the Cape May County Park and Zoo, as well as the County Park North due to today’s storm. Strong winds continue to blow and may get stronger which makes being in these public spaces unsafe. Both parks are expected to be open on Tuesday.
Access to the Townsend’s Inlet Bridge between Avalon and Stone Harbor was closed by local police. There was significant wave action in the Inlet which made it unsafe to drive on the access roads leading to the bridge. The roads will be opened again when it’s safe to do so.
Governor Phil Murphy announced this morning that the State of Emergency that is in existence in the State continues. He also insisted that people stay home unless they absolutely must travel. Generally speaking, so far so good regarding power outages in Cape May County during this winter storm event. There were fewer than ten customers without power shortly before lunchtime today. Winds are expected to pick up which can cause more outages over the next 24 hours.
Cape May County has experienced minor to moderate tidal flooding during the Monday morning high tide. Some streets have been compromised by tidal flooding in barrier island communities. The flooding is falling a little short of the projected high tide. The Coastal Flood Warning continue through Tuesday morning.
The Ocean City School District has switched to an all remote learning schedule for Monday. Students have been told not to report to school for in-person instruction. A winter storm will bring some moderate coastal flooding to the Jersey Shore during Monday’s high tide events.
New Jersey’s six vaccine “mega sites” will all be closed on Monday due to the snow. All appointments for Covid-19 vaccines will be rescheduled. The County’s vaccination location at Avalon Community Hall will also be closed on Monday.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has put the state under a State of Emergency as of Sunday at 7:00pm. Murphy says there is a heavy snowfall expected for much of the state, and the emergency declaration means that New Jersey will have every resource at its disposal to cope with the weather emergency.
