A man swimming in the Shrewsbury River in Monmouth Beach was hospitalized after he was stung by a clinging jellyfish. The species is native to the Pacific Ocean and was apparently transported to New Jersey by clinging to ships sailing from that area. Clinging jellyfish stings can cause serious medical problems, including kidney failure.
Officials have identified the man who was killed by a NJ Transit train in Monmouth County on Saturday. The victim was 26 year-old Thomas Gordon of Toms River, who was on the train tracks for an unknown reason when he was struck and killed by a train carrying 75 passengers and crew from Long Branch.
