A 36 year old Egg Harbor Township man has been charged with murder after he allegedly beat his girlfriend to death with a hammer. Police say Lashawn Smith is charged with murder in Friday’s killing of 28 year old Sarah Phillips. Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.
29 year old Mark Austin of Somers Point has been arrested after he fired a shot during a dispute that resulted in him being barricaded in his home for seven hours last Friday. Police say the apartment complex where Austin lives was shut down until the situation peacefully ended. There were no injuries.

Stone Harbor’s borough council will meet Tuesday afternoon and could take final action on a bond that would finance a new building for the police department. Council is expected to go into closed session to discuss employment issues.
The Cape May City Council will be holding a special meeting Monday afternoon. Council will entertain discussion from the bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee and may approve a closed session meeting dealing with the city’s Convention Hall. The meeting starts at 4:00pm.
The Lower Township Council meets Monday night and could ratify a four year contract between the Township and its superior offices. Council may also consider a special emergency appropriation for the preparation of an approved tax map. The meeting starts Monday at 7:00pm.
North Wildwood’s council will meet Wednesday to go out to bid for several improvement projects. Council may authorize bids for 24th Avenue boardwalk access improvements, a bulkhead replacement for 14th and 15th avenues, and a municipal toilet contract. Council may also establish a stipend program for its volunteer fire department.
No playoffs this year for the Middle Township football team. Middle Township was blanked by Pleasantville, 6-0 Friday night in a game broadcast live on WCZT by Brian Cunniff and Scott Wahl. Pleasantville improves to 7-1 on the season and clinched a berth in South Jersey Group II.
