The Press of Atlantic City reports 16 layoffs impact its own newspaper, and Catamaran Media, the publisher of the local Gazette newspapers. Declining advertising revenues and reduced circulation were reported as the reasons for the layoffs. BH Media is the parent company of the Press and other publications.
Some school districts throughout the Garden State are preparing for student walkouts as students demand much tighter gun laws in this country. More than a dozen school districts report walkouts are planned, but so far none are in our region. Not all walkouts are approved by the school districts.
Authorities are investigating a murder-suicide that occurred inside a health care facility in Sewell. A 76 year old man shot his wife inside the facility and then turned the gun on himself; the couple is from Mullica Hill. The man’s wife was a patient at the facility.
The parent company that owns and operates Acme supermarkets is now the owner of Rite Aid pharmacies. Albertsons announced the purchase of Rite Aid, currently the third largest pharmaceutical chain in the county. Shares in Rite Aid jumped by nearly 20 percent at the news regarding the acquisition.
Cape May County has awarded a contract worth $2.3 million to demolish the former Everlon building at the Cape May Airport in Lower Township. County officials say the work will begin in April and should result in future economic development at the airport. Above ground storage silos will be eliminated as part of the project.
He’s going to need a few more parts. A pickup truck drove through the front of an Auto Zone retail store in Ventnor Heights on Monday. The accident occurred shortly after 6:00pm on Monday. Police say the driver suffered from a medical episode which caused the accident. There were no serious injuries.
Colonel Patrick Callahan is Governor Murphy’s choice to head up the New Jersey State Police. NJ.com reports that Murphy has decided to stick with former governor Chris Christie’s choice, and Callahan will be named the full time superintendent of the State Police. Murphy will make the announcement this week.
Motorists are advised to use caution Tuesday morning as fog from unseasonably warm air will be over our region. One of the biggest special events in the Wildwoods during the winter comes on Saturday with the annual Fallen Heroes Polar Bear Plunge on the 15th Avenue beach in North Wildwood. The event raises money for families who lost police officers in the line of duty. Event registration occurs this week at fallenheroplunge.com.
Atlantic City Police charged a 50 year old local man with burglarizing three different businesses. Police say James Mason was captured with the help of a video camera. Among the businesses burglarized by Mason was the Rainforest Cafe on the city’s boardwalk.
