Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian is defending the city’s purchase of a former car dealership property for $9 million. Gillian announced over the weekend that the city paid fair market value for the dealership; the property will be converted into some sort of public use.
Ocean City intends to purchase a nearly two acre site that used to be the home of a car dealership. Council has authorized the purchase of the property on first reading; Mayor Jay Gillian says the property can be used for open space, parking, recreation, or for the home of a new police station.
A lightning strike on a utility pole in Ocean City was responsible for wires coming down on the roadway and setting a car on fire. It happened Tuesday night during a thunderstorm at 27th Street and Asbury Avenue, according to WPVI-TV. Another car was damaged; there were no injuries.

Two people were injured during a helicopter accident in Ocean City Friday morning. Authorities say the chopper had an instructor pilot and a student on board. It was practicing take offs and landings on the west side of the Ocean City Municipal Airport when it crashed; no word on what caused the accident.
The United States Coast Guard rescued three paddle boarders near Ocean City Thursday morning. The Coast Guard used a response boat from Ocean City to help bring the three people to safety near the Music Pier. The paddle boarders were stuck in a marsh.
