The American Civil Liberties Union tried to keep the polls open longer in New Jersey with a lawsuit Tuesday. It didn’t work. The ACLU contended that there were technical issues and delays at some polling sites. The court didn’t buy it, and the polls closed at 8pm Tuesday.
Election Day means most services and businesses are open for the day. The Motor Vehicle Commission closed today, but there will be mail delivery and most major banks are open. State offices and courts are also closed.
Election day has arrived in the Garden State. The polls opened at 6am today as voters cast ballots for governor, and for all seats in the New Jersey Legislature. There are some hotly contested local races as well, including in Middle and Upper townships. Polls remain open until 8pm.
Over 200,000 people decided to vote early in New Jersey. Ballots have been cast in person by voters early this year, before the polls open on Tuesday. That number represents just over three percent of the total people eligible to vote tomorrow.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has a comfortable lead in perhaps the final poll before Tuesday’s gubernatorial election. A new Farleigh Dickinson University poll released over the weekend finds Murphy with a nine point lead and 53 percent of the popular vote. Republican Jack Ciattarelli has 44 percent support among likely voters.
It looks like the gubernatorial race is Phil Murphy’s to lose. A Stockton poll released on Thursday gives Murphy a nine point lead over republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli. Ciattarelli has not lead the race in any of the pre-election polls. The key to the election will be voter turnout, which is usually the case.
Starting next Thursday, if you want a plastic straw in New Jersey, you will have to ask for it. State officials announced that plastic straws will only be available upon request starting November 4th. You will still be able to purchase packages of straws after November 4th.
