Congress last night authorized a bill that will finance the Coastal Heritage Trail in New Jersey. The measure was supported and introduced by outgoing Congressman Frank LoBiondo, who is retiring after his current term expires. The trail has been established in New Jersey since 1988.
Two wrestling coaches at Schalick High School in Salem County have been suspended due to hazing allegations in the program. The school board met Thursday night and suspended the wrestling coaches pending a further investigation. Further personnel action against the coaches is not being ruled out.
Senate President Steve Sweeney has told Governor Murphy that democrats in Trenton will consider no tax increases next year and he should abandon the idea now. A lawsuit has been filed by New Jersey and eight other states over President Trump’s plan to drill for oil off our coastline. New Jersey officials held a news conference Thursday to announce that a multi-state lawsuit has been filed. Delaware and Maryland are joining in the lawsuit.

New Jersey is expected to take additional steps to prevent offshore drilling off our coastline. The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General and the New Jersey DEP will make an announcement Thursday afternoon related to the effort. No winners..again..in last night’s Mega Millions lottery jackpot drawing. Since no winning tickets matched the numbers, the jackpot will roll over to $305 million for Friday night’s drawing. Since the Mega Millions has been in existence, there have been four Mega Millions jackpots won during Christmas weeks.
As of March 1st, it will cost you five dollars to cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The Delaware River and Bay Authority approved a rate increase that will generate $34 million in additional revenue. Commercial vehicles will be paying two dollars more per additional axle. It’s the first fare hike since July, 2011.
Welfare assistance checks are going up by ten percent in New Jersey. Governor Murphy on Monday signed a new bill into law that raises the $424 monthly check for a family of three to $466. This is the first increase in the check since Ronald Reagan was President.
The state has approved six additional medical marijuana dispensaries, and two of them are in our region. State officials announced Monday that a dispensary is coming to Atlantic City, and a second dispensary to Vineland. The only other dispensary in our region is currently located in Egg Harbor Township.
