New Jersey’s unemployment rate is at an all time low of 3.5 percent. That’s the lowest figure since the state began keeping records back in 1976. New Jersey is two tenths of a percent lower than the national average.
Governor Phil Murphy is defending the hiring of Cary Booker, Senator Cory Booker’s brother, to a $150,000 a year state job. Murphy is defending the hire this week even though Cary Booker headed up a charter school that had to close three years ago in Tennessee due to miserable performance.
A 31 year old police officer in the Mercer County, NJ Homicide Task Force was arrested Wednesday and charged with the murder of his three month old daughter. Daniel Bannister was busted and charged with the death of his daughter Hailey, who last December suffered a fractured skull, brain bleed, and multiple fractured ribs.
Newark Police are continuing their investigation into a shooting death that involved a police officer. 24-year police veteran John Formisano is accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife, and then shooting her boyfriend. Formisano was taken into police custody early this morning.
A man who was adrift at sea for two days in a small sailboat came ashore at Island Beach State Park and was taken to a hospital. NJ.com reports that man was not seriously injured, by dehydrated. Witnesses say the boat just slowly came ashore and a man was on board.
130 additional New Jersey State Troopers will be patrolling highways throughout the weekend looking for impaired and aggressive drivers. Last year, five people died on highways in the Garden State during the holiday weekend, and four of them involved impaired driving. Drunk driving will be strictly enforced.
Governor Phil Murphy signed the new state budget on Sunday, and today he froze $235 million in funding for essential programs, including funding for four year colleges. Murphy says it’s now up to the legislature to find the money to pay for these programs. He wants to end the year with more than $1 billion…
Governor Phil Murphy has signed a new bill that greatly expands the medical marijuana program in the Garden State. The new bill overhauls the program and will likely result in dozens of additional medical marijuana providers; currently, only six are in business.
New Jersey has made some big improvements to its traffic congestion website in advance of the July 4th holiday weekend. The website 511NJ.org has been enhanced to be viewable on mobile devices and has upgraded traffic cameras. The site provides real-time updates on traffic congestion issues related to volume, accidents, construction, and other matters.
New Jersey’s new ten dollar an hour minimum wage is in effect. The wage went into effect on Monday, and affects approximately 200,000 workers throughout the Garden State. The minimum wage will gradually increase to 15 dollars per hour.
