Matthew Milam is once again an assemblyman from our 1st Legislative District. Milam took his oath of office Thursday to fill a seat that was eventually created by the ascension of Jeff Van Drew to Congress. Milam previously served in the State Assembly from 2008 through 2013.
Congressman Jeff Van Drew has drafted a new federal bill that would prohibit all future government shutdowns. Van Drew’s legislation is called the “End Government Shutdowns Act” and requires a continuing resolution for any appropriations bill not approved by an October 1st deadline.

Branches of the Cape May County Library system are now accepting non perishable food items and unopened toiletries in behalf of Coast Guard families who are not getting paid during the government shutdown. All locations in the County system are accepting the donations during the shutdown.
Cape May County now has an affiliation agreement with Stockton University on a new study that will examine pediatric cancer rates. The initiative was brought forward by Freeholder Jeffrey Pierson. Students at both the graduate and undergraduate level will work within the County to collect data.
Congressman Jeff Van Drew has been appointed to a House committee dealing with agriculture. Van Drew is also hopeful to get on the natural resources committee as well. Van Drew says it’s been a long time since any congressman from New Jersey has served on the Agriculture Committee.

Former assemblyman Sam Fiocchi announced that he intends to seek his party’s nomination for the State Senate seat recently vacated by democrat Jeff Van Drew. Fiocchi claims people in our district have urged him to run for the seat. Republicans will pick a candidate in the spring.
