Cape May County Freeholders approved a resolution asking the state to commit more funding towards beach replenishment projects. The effort to increase the funding has been a longstanding position of the Jersey Shore Partnership. The state has not increased any money in the fund for more than two decades.
Cape May County’s health department is taking steps to address the Coronavirus concerns. The department has reached out to health care providers and schools with information about the illness. Cape May County is considered to be a low threat to be exposed to the virus.
Gasoline prices took a spike in Cape May County over the past week. Mid Atlantic AAA reports that gas prices have gone up by seven cents a gallon in just one week to an average of $2.52 locally. We are now six cents above the national average, and four cents above the state average.
Fire budgets were approved last weekend in Middle, Lower, Upper, and Dennis townships. Voters also approved the construction of a new firehouse in Goshen by a scant 15 votes.
Gasoline prices continue their downward trend in Cape May County. A new gas price survey by Mid Atlantic AAA puts the price for gasoline at $2.45 per gallon, three cents a gallon lower than it was one week ago. We are three points below the state average, but two pennies higher than the national average.
Cape May County GOP Chairman Marcus Karavan will be seeking his second term as head of the local republican party. Karavan has been endorsed by every republican mayor in the County as he seeks reappointment. Karavan issued his letter of intent for the seat just over a month ago.
The County’s new budget is expected to increase spending, but keep the tax rate flat. Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton reports that the budget will total $172.8 million, which is a 3.89 percent increase in spending. The County tax rate is expected to be .2279 this year. Paul Skill is the new president of the Cape May County Chiefs Association. An event was held over the weekend where Skill assumed the leadership position. Local lawmakers, including Congressman Jeff Van Drew, were in attendance for Skill’s promotion.
Fire district elections will be held in four local communities this Saturday. Voters in Dennis, Middle, Lower, and Upper townships will all cast votes on commissioners and fire district budgets. The polls will be open from 2:00-9:00pm.
Gasoline prices are dropping throughout New Jersey due to oil prices affected by coronavirus. In Cape May County, gasoline prices dropped by eight cents in one week to an average of $2.48 a gallon. We are three cents below the statewide average.
