A 32 year old man from Port Jefferson, New York has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in Avalon in July, 2018. The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Jerry Shields received the prison term on Friday. Shields was indicted on various charges in January, 2019.
A bridge that connects Middle Township to Avalon will be closed for three consecutive overnights next week. The Ingram’s Thorofare Bridge will be closed for overnight work starting next Tuesday. The westbound span of the bridge is under construction and could be finished in the spring.

Avalon is the latest community in line to join Cape May County Central Dispatch. Avalon’s Borough Council approved a five-year shared services agreement with the County that begins on March 1st. Avalon cites the latest technology advancements in the County dispatch system as one of the reasons for making the switch.
A man who has worked on the Avalon beaches since 1955 has retired. Longtime Avalon Beach Patrol captain Murray Wolf has retired. Avalon has named Matt Wolf as the new Chief of the Beach Patrol, and Ryan Black will serve as Captain. Both Wolf and Black have worked on the Avalon beaches as lieutenants.
Access to the Townsend’s Inlet Bridge between Avalon and Stone Harbor was closed by local police. There was significant wave action in the Inlet which made it unsafe to drive on the access roads leading to the bridge. The roads will be opened again when it’s safe to do so.
A proposal to construct a boardwalk restaurant in Avalon failed during a planning and zoning board meeting last night. The application for the restaurant was rejected via a 5-1 vote. The restaurant would have replaced a longstanding presence of an arcade, pizza shop, and ice cream parlor.

Avalon’s Borough Council met Wednesday evening and approved a new municipal ordinance that regulates the implementation of the expansion of various wireless facilities. Mayor Marty Pagliughi says the process was comprehensive, and requires various carriers to integrate into, and not dominate, communities in the Borough when they choose to implement 5G and other wireless technologies.
