Many local communities have held Arbor Day celebrations this week. On Friday morning, Avalon held an Arbor Day celebration which included a proclamation delivered by Mayor Marty Pagliughi to the Avalon Garden Club. The club planted a pink crape myrtle tree on a Dune Drive traffic island to recognize women who have battled breast cancer.
The Townsend’s Inlet Bridge between Avalon and Sea Isle City is open again to one lane of traffic. The bridge was shut down for about four weeks due to an ongoing maintenance project. The bridge is expected to remain one lane of alternating traffic until early June.
Cape May and Avalon have the best beaches in the Garden State, according to a new ranking from U.S. News. The publication noted Cape May’s architecture adjacent to the beaches, and recognized Avalon for high accessibility and the surf chair program that assists those with disabilities.

Avalon will be bringing one of the most popular recreational activities outside this summer. Avalon announced it will be placing ten new outdoor pickle ball courts at the 8th Street recreation complex starting next month. During the afternoon hours, the courts will be free to the public to use.
County freeholders meet Tuesday and are expected to award a contract to an engineering firm to address scouring issues at two County-owned bridges in Avalon. A proposal totaling nearly $150,000 may be awarded to address scouring and erosion damage at the 21st and 25th street bridges the County towns on the west side of Avalon.

Avalon is putting some surplus chairs to good use. Avalon donated 200 chairs from its Community Hall to the International Christian Development Mission; the chairs will be used in a school and place of worship in Haiti. The Avalon Borough Council approved the chair donation during its meeting on Wednesday evening.
