Atlantic County democrats are supporting Amy Kennedy in this year’s congressional race against republican Jeff Van Drew. Democrats met on Sunday and beat Brigid Harrison by about a two to one vote margin. Harrison has been supported by Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez.
A firefighter was briefly trapped inside a burning condominium complex in Mays Landing early Friday morning. The blaze broke out at the Mays Landing Village Complex on John Adams Court. The firefighter did not suffer serious injuries; no cause has been determined.
A woman from Salem tried to board an airplane at Atlantic City International Airport with a loaded .38 caliber handgun last week. Authorities say the TSA spotted the loaded gun in her bag and confiscated it. The gun was loaded with six bullets. The woman was eventually released.
The video game store Game Stop will be closing its doors at the Hamilton Mall. NJ Advance Media learned that the store will be closing, but no closing date has been scheduled yet. Game Stop also operates a store in Rio Grande.
Two Atlantic County men have each received five years in prison for setting a friend on fire during a prank. 24 year old Brandon Perez of Hammonton and 25 year old David Sult of Mays Landing pleaded guilty to second degree charges of aggravated assault. A wind-whipped fire destroyed some bayfront condominiums in Brigantine at sunrise Thursday morning. Fire officials say a fire gutted several condos at 12th Street and the bay this morning. Fire crews were called in to make sure the flames did not spread to other homes in the neighborhood.
A controlled burn will be held Sunday at the Estell Manor Park, just off Route 50. The State Forest Fire Service holds the burns in order to remove underbrush that can cause a much bigger fire. The fire on Sunday will occur between 10am and 6pm.
New Jersey State Police rescued two distressed kayakers in the Barnegat Bay last Wednesday. Police say they received a report of two kayakers about a mile off the coast of Barnegat municipal docks. The troopers pulled the victims to safety and provided dry clothing to prevent hypothermia.
Spirit Airlines is increasing the number of flights between Atlantic City and Florida this summer. The airline announced that additional flights will run to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Myrtle Beach. Spirit has been flying to Atlantic City since 1992.
