On his last full day as governor, Chris Christie signed a bill into law that renames the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall in the memory of former Atlantic City Mayor and Atlantic County Senator Jim Whelan. Boardwalk Hall was constructed back in 1929 and at one time was the world’s largest clear span space.
The United States Coast Guard rescued a fisherman who became ill on a boat about 60 miles away from Atlantic City early Thursday morning. Officials say the Delaware Bay commander center was notified about the ill fisherman on the boat “Illusion”. The man was taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Heads up! The World Long Drive Association will be holding an event in Atlantic City in early June. The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority announced that the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bash will be held on June 4-5th in the city. The culmination of the event will be televised on that Tuesday night, on the Golf Channel.
A new bill that would name Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in the memory of the late State Senator Jim Whelan now heads to the governor’s desk for his signature. Whelan passed away last year after previously serving in the State Legislature, and as Mayor of the city.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation has completed its snow removal efforts in Atlantic City. About 50 pieces of equipment were mobilized to the gaming resort to clear ten city blocks of snow; the request for State assistance was made by new Atlantic City Mayor Frank Gilliam.
More than 2,000 jobs will be created in Atlantic City this year now that the Revel Casino has officially changed hands for the price tag of $200 million. A Colorado investor bought the former Revel Casino and plans to open it this summer as the Ocean Resort Casino.
An incredibly busy day for the Atlantic City Fire Department got busier Thursday night with a fire at a low income apartment complex. A fire broke out Thursday night on the top floor of the Jeffries Inlet Towers on North Vermont Avenue. Early reports indicated there were no injuries.
It was ridiculously cold for Atlantic City’s polar bear plunge event on New Year’s Day. Temperatures were in the teens, and snow was on the beach for the 27th annual event that raises money for charity. Water temperatures are still in the 40s.
Democrat Frank Gilliam is the new Mayor of Atlantic City. Gilliam took his oath of office Monday afternoon and replaces republican Don Guardian. Gilliam is 47 years old and previously served Atlantic City as a councilman at large.
Don Guardian’s last full day as Mayor of Atlantic City is Sunday. Guardian will be replaced by democrat Frank Gilliam Jr. during a ceremony on Monday. Guardian will take over the Business Administrator duties for Toms River.
