SPORTS: MAINLAND KNOCKS MIDDLE OUT OF CAL BASKETBALL TOURNEY

A big win for the Mainland Mustangs girls basketball team Monday night.  Mainland knocked Middle Township out of the CAL Tournament, 42-36.  That was Middle Township’s fifth loss of the season.  Mainland will battle Wildwood Catholic, the top seed, in the second round.

PRESIDENT SENDS OUT HAPPY BIRTHDAY TWEET..TO JEFF VAN DREW

President Donald Trump sent out a happy birthday tweet over the weekend.  Trump tweeted happy birthday to Congressman Jeff Van Drew, who turned 67 on Sunday.  In the tweet, the President called the new republican a “courageous leader”.

ELDERLY WOMAN INJURED DURING HOUSE FIRE IN MARGATE

A 76 year old woman suffered burns during a house fire in Margate last week.  Fire officials say the woman got out of the home on her own.  The fire started when a candle was left too close to a combustible item.  The victim remains hospitalized.

FUNERAL SERVICES SATURDAY FOR CAPE MAY REV. MGSR TIMOTHY RYAN, 88

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the St. John of God Church in North Cape May for longtime Rev. Mgsr. Timothy Ryan.  Ryan passed away over the weekend at the age of 88.  He served both the St. Ann’s and Our Lady Star of the Sea parishes in Cape May County.

GOVERNOR MURPHY TO CALL FOR ANOTHER TAX HIKE ON THE WEALTHY

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is expected to again call for another tax hike on the wealthy in the Garden State.  Murphy’s annual budget message will be delivered Tuesday afternoon in Trenton.  Murphy is also expected to include more money to pay down the pension debt, and fund public schools.

INGRAM’S THOROFARE BRIDGE SCHEDULED TO CLOSE MONDAY AT 7:00PM

The Ingram’s Thorofare Bridge on Avalon Boulevard in Middle Township is scheduled to close Monday at 7:00pm.  The bridge is expected to remain closed until 5:00am Tuesday as a contractor working on the span will pour concrete.  The bridge is undergoing major renovations during the next two off seasons.

REPORT: FOUR MODELL’S SPORTING GOODS STORE TO CLOSE IN NEW JERSEY

Four Modell’s Sporting Goods locations in New Jersey are scheduled to close due to downsizing.  NJ Advance Media reports that the stores are located in Englishtown, Rockaway, West Berlin, and Woodbridge.  The Modell’s chain lost $50 million during 2019.
