SPORTS: LADY CRUSADERS ADVANCE IN SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS

The Wildwood Catholic girls’ softball team advanced in the South Jersey playoffs Thursday by knocking off Holy Spirit, 13-1.  Wildwood Catholic is the top seed in South Jersey Non Public B and will host Holy Cross in a semifinal game on Tuesday.  Wildwood Catholic had 20 hits in the game. Ocean City High School’s postseason baseball run ended Thursday.  The Red Raiders dropped a 4-1 decision to Seneca to have their season ended.  Brandon Lashley struck out 16 for Ocean City, allowing only two hits.

PREDICTION: HURRICANE SEASON EXPECTED TO BE ACTIVE

2018 should produce a pretty active hurricane season for the Atlantic seaboard.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say we should have a normal or above normal hurricane season, with a good likelihood of 10-16 named storms this year.  Hurricane season begins next Friday.

FIRE DESTROYS BUS ON GARDEN STATE PARKWAY IN CENTRAL JERSEY

A massive bus fire caused delays on the Garden State Parkway Thursday near milepost 116.  Two dozen passengers got off the bus safely before it completely burned.  Southbound lanes on the Parkway were closed in that area Thursday, but they will be open for inbound holiday shore traffic Friday.

COUNTY MAKING FINAL PLANS FOR MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY MONDAY

Cape May County will be holding a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday afternoon.  County officials will be on hand for the ceremony which will be held at the Veterans’ Cemetery.  In the event of rain, the event will be held inside the County’s public safety training center.

ATLANTIC CITY GETS NEW SEAWALL, BOARDWALK IN ADVANCE OF HOLIDAY

Atlantic City has a new seawall and boardwalk in place before the holiday weekend.  City officials will be hosting a press conference Friday morning to discuss the $38.6 million project.  The area of the boardwalk where the seawall now exists was battered during severe coastal storms, including Hurricane Sandy.
