Cumberland County got a lot more snow than Cape May County, and that means several larger schools are closed for the day on Thursday. School districts including those in Bridgeton, Millville, Vineland, and Upper Deerfield are all closed on Thursday due to several inches of snow from Wednesday’s storm.
Cape May’s city council met this week and approved some initial funding for the construction of a new public safety building for the community. Cape May will spend $300,000 for the building; the city will put out a request for proposal for design ideas for what is needed.
The longtime mayor of Brigantine will not seek re-election this year. Phillip Guenther has served as the mayor of the community for the past 25 years. Guenther will keep his job as the superintendent of the Atlantic County Special Services and Vocational School districts.

The number of power outages grew to over 10,000 Wednesday evening in the Atlantic City Electric territory. Nearly all of Cape May County kept the lights on but major outages were reported north and west of Vineland. Some of the estimated restoration times stretch into Thursday morning.
Vineland Police are investigating a home invasion robbery that injured two men last Thursday. Police say the robbery occurred at the East Almond Estates when two men dressed in black rushed in the apartment and attacked the two men inside. The suspects are still on the loose.
A couple of government meetings scheduled for Ocean City Wednesday evening have been cancelled. City officials announced that both the Board of Education and the Zoning Board meetings scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed by today’s bad weather. Both meetings will be held next week.
So far, the winter storm has not been terrible for Atlantic City Electric. As of early Wednesday afternoon, there were 2,000 power outages reported by the utility with the majority of them northwest of Vineland. Despite strong gusty winds, most of the power has stayed on in Cape May County.
The snow is too much for bus service at New Jersey Transit. The state’s transportation company announced that it will suspend all bus service for the day Wednesday at 3:00pm due to accumulating snow throughout the Garden State. Ridership has been low throughout the day due to the snowstorm.
Despite the doom and gloom associated with the weather, the Wildwood Crest Borough Commission meeting is still on for this afternoon. The Crest announced that the meeting will be held at 5:30pm inside the courtroom on the first floor of Borough Hall.
