The nation’s largest holiday high school basketball tournament is scheduled to tip off Saturday at the Wildwood Convention Center. The Boardwalk Basketball Classic begins with several games, including two boys basketball matchups featuring battles between local teams. Middle Township will take on Lower Cape May, and Wildwood will play Wildwood Catholic.
Jeffrey Sutherland was sworn in Thursday as the new prosecutor for Cape May County. Sutherland replaces Robert Taylor, who retired at the end of November. New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino says Sutherland has a wealth of legal experience and is eminently qualified to assume the office.
Bridgeton Police say a 65 year old man was killed a week ago while walking across the street. Police released information this week about the death of Stephen Novaska, who was struck by a truck driven by another Bridgeton man on South Pearl Street. No word yet if any charges have been filed.
A 31 year old Vineland man has been indicted by a grand jury on first degree murder and other offenses in connection with the shooting death of a Millville man. Jules R. Black has been charged with murder in connection with a drive by shooting that killed 26 year old Christian Rodgers in April.
Governor-elect Phil Murphy will replace Bob Martin as head of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Catherine McCabe was appointed to the post on Thursday. McCabe has served previously in the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Martin was seen as a good friend to the Jersey Shore.
A school bus driver in Lakewood has been charged with drunk driving and road rage following an incident on Wednesday. Police say 54 year old bus driver Angel Colon was investigated and police smelled alcohol on his breath. NJ.com reports that Colon was taken to the Ocean County Jail.
An investigation is underway into the cause of a house fire in West Wildwood early this morning. Authorities say the fire broke out at a home located in the 600 block of West Maple Avenue around 1 o’clock this morning. There were no injuries. Damage to the building is estimated at $200,000.
