A 50 year old Atlantic City woman admitted to authorities that she stole $18,000 in welfare benefits that she was not entitled to. Evonda Valentine pleaded guilty this week to a charge of theft by deception; she will be sentenced in May and forced to pay restitution. ##
A major drainage improvement project for Ocean City will begin before the weekend. Mayor Jay Gillian announced that equipment will be arriving very soon to begin work on the pumping station project between 26th Street and 34th Street. Four new pumping stations are being added to the area. ##
Hard Rock has bought the former Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, and on Wednesday unveiled major plans for the property. The Hard Rock announced that it intends to include thousands of slot machines, two large arenas, and other amenities when it re-opens for business in the summer of 2018. ##

There have been five suicides at the Cumberland County Jail over the past 30 months; now, the feds are investigating. NJ.com reports that the United States Department of Justice will be investigating the suicides that began in 2014; there was a fifth suicide at the jail two months ago. ##
The Payless Shoe store in Cape May Court House is among 400 stores that are closing nationwide. Payless confirmed today that the Court House location is closing while others in our region are staying open. Six other New Jersey Payless stores will close, the rest are in central and northern New Jersey. ##
The central New Jersey beach community of Deal will hold a meeting Wednesday night in an attempt to restrict beachfront parking. Opponents say the proposed parking permitting process would restrict access to the beaches, which everyone pays for and uses. Deal has attempted this parking prohibition before, but failed to get it enacted.
