Taxes are going up in Upper Township. The Township Committee has approved a new budget that increases the local purpose tax rate by two cents. The tax levy in Upper Township will be slightly over $3 million this year. The Township’s budget is largely supported by revenue derived from the B.L. England generating station.
Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian says no, the city will not cut the salaries of council members and other essential positions in government to save money. Guardian says the city was caught off guard by comments made by Councilman Kaleem Shabazz that 20 percent pay cuts should be spread around government to reduce expenses.
Amazon is adding 2,000 new jobs to the Garden State. The company announced that it will open two new fulfillment centers in the state, one of them in Burlington County. Amazon already boasts of 5,500 jobs created in New Jersey before these two new centers open.
A former petty officer at the Cape May Coast Guard base has been sentenced to six months confinement for a sexual assault. Petty Officer Third Class William Fisher will be dishonorably discharged from the Coast Guard as a result of the sentence. Fisher is serving his sentence in Virginia.
