WOMAN CHARGED WITH VEHICLAR HOMICIDE

An Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted a Milmay woman on second-degree charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel announced.

It is alleged that on July 3, 2010 around 9:30 p.m., Linda Demarest, 46, struck and killed David Brown, 38, of Newfield, on Tuckahoe Road in Buena Vista Township where Brown was standing outside of his disabled vehicle waiting for assistance. Demarest initially stopped and was observed by an off duty Atlantic County Sheriff’s Officer who came upon the scene after the accident. Demarest fled after the officer located Brown’s body in the woods and instructed her to call 911, according to Assistant Prosecutor Diane Ruberton who presented the case to the Grand Jury.

Less than an hour after the incident, New Jersey State Police Officers went to the defendant’s Tuckahoe Road residence in Milmay. As officers approached the residence, Demarest pulled out of her driveway and struck a pole in a church parking lot near her residence, according to Assistant Prosecutor Ruberton.

Prosecutor’s Office Sgt. Kevin Hincks along with members of the New Jersey State Police conducted the investigation.

A second-degree crime carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine of up to $150,000.
