SCHUNDLER UNVEILS PLAN TO REFORM EDUCATION IN NEW JERSEY

It was a tough sell, but New Jersey Education Commissioner Bret Schundler met with hundreds of educators on Monday and spelled out a new education reform plan that will reward teachers with merit pay.  Schundler spent time in Trenton unveiling a new state program that will result in major changes to the state’s education system, including a new teacher evaluation system that will be based on student test scores.  Legislation is expected to be unveiled next week in Trenton that would ask lawmakers for support on this new legislation.  If the state makes major reforms to its education programs, up to $400 million in federal funds may become available through a special “Race to the Top” federal program.
