A retired Hammonton detective was indicted for leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident that left a 15-year-old boy dead in Hamilton Township in 2010.
In August of 2010, Anthony Scaltrito, 64, of Hammonton, turned himself in to the Hamilton Township Police Department after allegedly fatally striking Justin Montgomery, of Hammonton, with his vehicle and fleeing the scene of the accident. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene minutes after the crash.
An Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Scaltrito for second-leaving the
scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, third-degree endangering an injured victim and two counts of fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence. If convicted, Scaltrito faces up to a 5-10 year New Jersey State Prison sentence for the second-degree crime, a 3-5 year sentence for the third-degree crime and up to 18 months for each count of fourth-degree crime.
Mr. Scaltrito was released in August of 2010 after posting $50,000 bail by bond.
