PROPOSED BILL WOULD ALLOW ADOPTEES TO ACCESS BIRTH CERTIFICATE

New Jersey Seal 2014Legislation that cleared the full Assembly in Feb. would allow adoptees, over the age of 18, to get a copy of their original birth certificate. The legislation says it would protect the privacy of birth parents by allowing them to indicate whether or not they would want to be contacted by the child. Birth parents would be able to file documents with the state registrar stipulating whether they prefer direct contact with the adopted person, contact only through an intermediary, or no contact at all.
