MIDDLE TWP. COPS INVESTIGATE DAMAGE AT CEMETERY

On the above date the Middle Township Police Department received a report of damaged headstones at the Baptist Cemetery on Church Street in the Cape May Court House section of the Township.  Investigation revealed that a vehicle drove over several headstones to burial plots and left the scene.  It appears the vehicle purposely ran over the headstones, as it appeared to come to a stop, spin wheels in reverse and then run over more headstones.  It is estimated that several thousand dollars worth of damage was caused.  The department is awaiting more information from the caretaker of the cemetery as to how many headstones will need to be replaced and the names of the families of the deceased.  At the scene was a hubcap belonging to a Ford motor vehicle.  A search of the part number found the hubcap could belong to a Ford Expedition made between the years 1997 and 2000 or a Ford F-150 made between the years 1997 and 2004.  The vehicle could possibly have heavy front end damage due to the size and weight of the headstones.  Anyone with any information in reference to this case is asked to call the Middle Township Police Department at 609-465-8700.  Corporal Francis Fiore investigated.
