LAWMAKERS GIVE INITIAL APPROVALS TO PENSION FUND FOR COPS, FIREFIGHTERS

Lawmakers in Trenton have given initial approvals to a new bill that would allow police and firefighters to spin off their pension fund to be administered by a special panel.  The current fund has $27 billion in assets; union leaders say they can do a better job managing the money than is being done by the State of New Jersey.
