COAST GUARD REMINDS VESSELS OF WHALE SAFETY

The Coast Guard is making a push to help protect whales. Operation Right Speed is in effect until April 2012 for large vessel operators. Collisions with ships and interaction with fishing gear are a major cause of mortality and injury to the North Atlantic right whale. The regulations require vessels 65-feet or greater to operate at 10 knots or less over ground in certain locations at certain times of year along the east coast of the Atlantic seaboard consistent with the animals migratory pattern.
