BUILDING COLLAPSES TUESDAY IN LOWER TOWNSHIP

On Tuesday, 06-08-10, at approximately 7 am, Lower Township Officials were notified of a building collapse at 1280 Wilson Road in the Township’s Schellinger’s Landing Section. Building is described as an old large, wooden boat house located just west of the Dolphin and Whale Watch Center on the border with Cape May City.

Old pilings supporting the structure gave way and a portion of the building collapsed into the back bay waterway and several small pieces of the building broke off and were floating in the channel behind the building.

The Lower Township Police Department, the United States Coast Guard and local and county OEM Officials responded to the scene, along with the Lower Township Construction Office Inspector, Gary Playford.

The building was unoccupied at the time and Lower Township Police report that all utilities to the building including electric and water, had been shut off for some time. Coast Guard Officials determined that the building was not a hazard to navigation and Lower Township Construction Officials reported that the structure would most likely have to be torn
down.

Lower Township Police reported that the building was sold approximately two weeks ago to a new owner who had planned to demolish the building in the near future.
