BICYCLE THEFT IN AVALON LEADS TO ARREST

Avalon Police have arrested and charged a 21 year old woman with stealing a police bicycle during an undercover police operation designed to reduce the number of bicycle thefts in the community.

On Wednesday, July 21st at 1:04am, Avalon Police placed a bike belonging to the Avalon Police Department on the sidewalk of 34th Street and Ocean Drive. The bike was left intentionally unsecured by Patrolman Tu-Juan Baile and Special Officer Robert Morgano of the Avalon Police Department as part of an ongoing sting operation.

A short while later a woman was observed picking up and riding away on the bike. She was subsequently stopped by the police and arrested. An investigation led to charges being filed against the suspect.

The suspect is identified as 21-year old Lauren Huff of Malvern, PA.  Ms. Huff was charged with theft.  She was processed at the Avalon Police Department and released on her own recognizance.

The Avalon Police Department continues to crack down on bicycle thefts in the Borough. Police remind residents and visitors that bicycle thefts are crimes of opportunity, and bikes should be locked, or kept in secure buildings when not in use.  Avalon Police have begun a free, voluntary bicycle registration program to help identify and recover bicycles that are stolen. To register your bicycle with the Avalon Police Department, visit the Avalon Public Safety Building at 31st Street and Dune Drive.
